What if You Don't Know Your Birth Time?

A Simple Guide to Understanding Your Astrology Chart Without an Exact Time

Not everyone knows their exact birth time, and that's more common than you might think. While your birth time does add an extra layer of detail to your chart, there is still a lot we can explore without it.

What Changes Without a Birth Time?

Without an exact birth time, there are a few things we can't determine as accurately:

  • Your Ascendant (rising sign)
  • Your house placements (where things show up in your life)

A note on accuracy

The Ascendant changes roughly every two hours, which means even small differences in birth time can matter.

For example, if the Ascendant changes at 10am and you were born just after, at 10:10am, you could have a completely different rising sign.

This is why an accurate birth time becomes important when we're looking at the more detailed layers of your chart.

What You Can Still Learn From Your Chart

Even without a birth time, your chart can still offer meaningful insight into:

  • Your emotional patterns and inner world
  • Relationship dynamics and recurring themes
  • Core personality traits and natural tendencies
  • Cycles of growth and personal development

At its core, astrology is about understanding the patterns shaping your experience — and those patterns are still very much available.

How to Find Your Birth Time

If you're looking to find your birth time, there are a few places you can check:

  • Your birth certificate
Some birth certificates include the exact time, although not all do.
  • Ask your mum or family members
Some people remember very clearly, while others may only have a rough idea.
  • Baby photos or baby books
Sometimes photos were taken of your name card and birth time at the hospital, or your family may have kept your baby band or records.
  • Newspapers
Older generations often had birth announcements published in local newspapers. These don't always include the time, but it is worth checking.
  • Contact the hospital where you were born
In some cases, hospitals may still hold records and be able to provide this information.
